A BIT ABOUT HEIDI BAKER

HEIDI BAKER

Amongst the acres of brown dirt and hundreds of dark black children is this bright glowing light…Heidi Baker. She’s a very white woman with very blond hair. She contrasts this environment like the light from a far off planet on a dark midnight sky. She pulls onto the base in one of the many white Land Rovers that are constantly roaming this area. She usually appears as if she has many things on her mind but rarely do the concerns of her thoughts interfere with the love she exudes when greeting the children. As soon as she arrives, she’s instantly swarmed by the many waiting little ones yelling her name, “Mamma Heidi, Mamma Heidi!” She gets out of the truck and opens her arms to as many of them that she can hug. She shares some love and affections with them and moves on to the next batch, embracing as many as them that are able to fit into her embrace. As she walks on to where ever she’s headed, there’s usually a trail of children in tow. The picture kind of reminds me of The Pied Piper. Most all of these children are street kids without parents so it’s quite natural for Heidi to take on the role of mother… which she does ever so gladly.

When you hear ‘Mamma Heidi’ talk about the mission she’s on, you can feel the love and passion drenching her words. She lights up and pours out…all the while with a clan of dusty, little black children hanging all about her. She never seems the slightest bit fazed by any of this. She just continues to talk about the latest event that happened, how many soul that have been saved or new churches planted…or the next outreach that’s coming up.

Her heart is for the people of Mozambique, every one of them. She ministers to the young and old, men and women alike. She’s built orphanages filled with children of all ages all over the country, It seems the only criteria is that the children really are orphans and not just village kids looking for a hand out…although her heart goes out for all of them as well.

Iris Ministries has been handing out to the villages, solar powered bibles that have been translated into Portuguese, the native language. They’re presently working on translating them into Makua, the second most common native language in the villages. For a village in the middle of Africa with hardly any resources whatsoever to be able to hear the word of God in their native tong is one sensational and amazing accomplishment!

Heidi Baker is most certainly the real deal - and the work that she’s doing here in Mozambique, Africa is equally as real. You need not question for even a second that any bit of support offered to this ministry is support being used to further the mandate of Christ…’reaching the (un-reached) nations.’ Keep in mind that these are people that most of us don’t even know exist, and even if we did, we most likely wouldn’t want to intermingle with them for too long. Heidi Baker, her husband Roland and the rest of her family have made their home here among these people - and have been living and working right along side of them for many years.

My humbled love and respect and support go out to Heidi Baker, her family and the entire ministry of dedicated missionaries… both long, as well as short term.
